Wooden Garden Sheds

An introduction to the wooden garden shed

People have wooden garden sheds for many reasons, not just as an answer to their storage problems. What size shed you choose, and what type of wood it is built from, will depend on how you intend to use the shed and the size of your garden. If you only have a small, outside space, then you will probably only have room for a small garden shed. You can buy some great, ready made sheds or you may prefer to build one yourself or have it custom built. If you plan on having a large garden shed then you may want to check with your local council in case you need permission to erect it. Most garden sheds are still made from wood, although it is possible to get hard plastic, metal or brick sheds, those made from wood are still the most popular. You can use different types of wood sidings on sheds and create a shed that looks different from the general run of the mill garden shed.

You can get sheds made from different types of wood. Most of the small, cheaper sheds are made from plywood and engineered wood. These woods are fine for a while, but eventually the wood starts to warp and the shed lets water. If you want something that is going to last for years then you should expect to pay for better wood that is more expensive. Most builders recommend tongue and groove wood for sheds as it is more durable. Treated or tanalised wood is often used for sheds and has a greenish colour. This type of wood is meant for sheds that are designed to last for at least ten years. The only problem with tanalised wood is that if it is not dried out correctly then it can result in shrinkage, which is definitely not good for your shed. Cedar is one of the best woods because it is a hard wood and less susceptible to changing weather conditions. Oak can also be used for sheds and is very expensive, but it will last almost forever.
