Wooden Garden Sheds

Wooden garden shed construction

If you want a shed that meets certain requirements then you may find it easier to construct it yourself. You only have to do a quick internet search and you will find plans for building a shed, the type and amount of wood you will need, and instructions on how to erect it. These kits are quite good as many of them come with step by step instructions; kits work better for smaller sized sheds. If you plan on building a large shed then you might want to get some professional help in constructing it. When you buy a building kit there is less choice and you may not be able to get exactly what you want, but they’re great if all you want is a tool shed.

When you plan on constructing a shed the first thing that you should do is to clear the ground where the unit is going to be built. You need to ensure that the ground that will be underneath the shed is level, even if you plan to erect the shed on a concrete base. A lot will depend on whether you want to build your shed from scratch, or whether you are considering one of the do it yourself kits that are available on the market. You should look for plans that also list all the materials you will need if you do plan on building your own shed.

Building a garden shed works much better if you set yourself a plan and a task list. It is possible to get a small shed built in a weekend. On the first day you should clear the ground if you haven’t already done so and then lay the base, if you want a concrete base, you’ll have to do it over two weekends. The base usually takes around a week to dry out properly so you’ll have to give it a rest after that. If you decide to go for just a wood floor then this will be a lot quicker and cheaper, the other advantage is that the wooden base makes the shed more portable if you decide to move. Just set the floor on top of some patio blocks. When you cut the floor joists, use the first one as a template for the rest of the joists. Use deck screws instead of nails as these are a lot stronger. If you use a power drill to fix the boards together the work will be much quicker than if you use a manual one.

The walls are put together in the same way as the floor. If you use tongue and groove instead of plywood sheets it will take quite a bit longer but the end result will be better and more durable. The roof and the door go on last, and you will need to consult the plans about putting in the trusses. Make sure that all the trusses fit together properly; you can screw them together and fix them to the top of the shed walls. You will need to lay tar paper over the trusses as you would with use roofing felt on a house, then you can cut and nail the strips for the roof. Start from the bottom up and overlay the strips one on top of the other. Use a prefabricated door as you will save a lot of time.

The most common shed design is one with an apex roof, or you may prefer a pent shed that has only one side of the roof sloping. Apex sheds are more expensive to buy and to build because they are generally much larger and more reliable. If you buy an apex shed kit then it should contain the frame, the redwood and all of the fixings and screws that will be needed. Once you have a concrete base then the rest of the shed is usually built from the floor up. If you want a wooden garden shed with windows then it is possible to buy them ready made, some do it yourself shed kits also come with windows. A wooden shed is made from solid lumber, which is used for the frame as well as the floor and the walls. Apex sheds usually have rafters and look a bit like a barn.
