Buying a wooden garden shedA few things for the shed buyer and builder to consider. If you are building a working shed then you may want to install shelves and a work bench, these tend to last longer when they are installed during the construction phase. Whether you are building your own shed or buying one that is already constructed you should really choose one that is made from tongue and groove wood. You can get sheds that have what is known as an overlap construction; the problem with this type of shed is that it is often made from cheaper, inferior wood. If you want your shed to last then you would do better to go for tongue and groove construction. Sheds that are constructed from tongue and groove are more expensive than those made with overlap, but they will last a lot longer. If you choose one with overlap construction then the roof is often made of nothing more than chipboard, overtime this becomes less water proof. Sheds with overlap construction often need to be replaced within three years, whereas one that has tongue and groove construction is more robust and will last a lot longer. Before you decide on a ready constructed shed you should take a good look around your local show rooms to make sure that you are getting the right size, shape and construction of shed that you want in your garden. Sheds should be constructed from 16mm tongue and groove planks and have a framework of 50mm x 25mm wood beams. You can find heavier planks if that is what you want, this will certainly last longer, but will also have an increased cost. Tongue and groove construction not only lasts longer than overlap, it also looks better and has added stability. If you want your shed to last then you should reapply protective coating every year or two while you are carrying out any other maintenance tasks. Cedar is a good choice of wood for a shed because it is a hard wood and can stand up to harsher weather conditions than some other wood. Cedar wood has its own natural oil that helps to stave of infestation by termites and other pests. If you want a shed that can be used as an extra room then you may find that youll need to have it custom built. Most of the prefabricated sheds that are on sale are great for general use, but is you want something with a lot of natural light, that is big enough to use as a music room or a spacious home office, then get it custom built. A custom built shed can be quite a big project and you can expect your garden to be a mess for at least a week or two, depending on the type of builder you use. Some custom built sheds are almost as good as a small house, but you probably just want an extra room for all those activities that just dont fit well in the house. If, for example, you have a budding trumpeter or drummer, then letting them practise in the house could prove problematic. If you have a custom built garden shed then they are not too close to the neighbours to annoy them, and you can spend your evening in peace rather than listening to their practice numbers time after time. You can even have the shed fitted with secure cupboards so that they can store equipment rather than cluttering up their bedroom, or worse still, your living room. When you have a custom built shed you get to choose
the wood, the size and shape of the building, and the type of windows
and door that you want on it. You may even have a choice of flooring.
A custom built shed could add value to your home and prove an asset
in many other ways, but it is an investment and may cost thousands
of pounds if it is done properly. If, however, you have a budding
musician, or a writer who wants peace and quiet, then a custom built
shed/room could be the answer. Find cheap, bargain, discount, new and used wooden garden sheds with WoodenGardenSheds.info and our cheap garden storage related information pages and web links.
